1. FGM is a social / cultural problems 2. In Africa Islam and Christianity adopted FGM as a tool of social control over women 3. Nowadays the major cause of the diffusion and of the permanence of FGM is Islam 4. Islam adds a religious support and motivation to the practice in many parts Islam itself 5. Islam authorities are devided about FGM 6. Christian authorities of the region where FGM exists and where Christians practice it seem to be more united against the practice.
My strategy is since Islamic environment support in some way FGM and Islam has got a huge influence on cultural and social traditions, I think that we need to do a job of persuasion on Islamic religious authorities and/or organization to change their attitude regarding FGM.
This means to involve in this a great number of Muslims, but if we attack Islam about FGM, like Graeme does, we will never get in touch with that environment and we will never have a single hope to solve the problem.
Strangely enough I agree with you on quite a few points Luca. In the end, if we were to ask a government to introduce legislation against this, it's not really going to matter what the origins are. But if you think that by removing any associations to religion you'll somehow make them believe the same, and make them more likely to do so, that I think is delusional. Appealing to individual Muslims is useless, because they have little or no say in government. They also have little or no influence over Islamic doctrine. And Luca, if you want no opposition to the things you say here, then you have at least three choices: Remove people like me from this group, don't say anything, or try and be a little more thick skinned and receptive to criticism. Because after all, actually making a difference is more important than being right, or 'unoffended'.
