The progressive arnis that i practice is not meant to hurt practitioners, tough some accidents can happen (some newbie hittin' your fingers with a stick if youre not paying enough atention, for example).
I think that Arnis by nature is a defensive Martial Art, so for i time you mainly focus in the development of your own skills (you know, its progressive because every skill you manage to learn is the tool to learn the next skill) and not in competition or defeating competition foes... later you realize you must have a knowledge of the whole proccess, so you can "play" with your arnis mates without hurting any one, including you :).
When i was a teenager, i practiced some kickboxing and lots of kungfu, jogging, etc... but now that i feel comfortable with arnis, i can tell for sure that i can rely in arnis in a way i never relied on other martial art.
Arnis, Kali Escrima,Are martial arts, Developed for Real combat, tryed and tested in the Philippines, defending the country from invading there homeland. i would say it has been tryed and tested for many hundreds of years, and proven to be a very effective art. Also very easy to get to learn in a short period of time and apply with great success.
Modern times Different Methods change for a more modern and peaceful times. so the sport of Filipino Martial arts has become a lots more famous, there are different format's full contact armour in some groups and no armour in others. ofcousre this is all depends what sort of reality experience your looking to develope.
