Topic: U.S soldier turns gun on his own army
12 dead
More than 30 wounded
A soldier (Of Jordanian decent) pulled the trigger.

Will there be an increase in "home grown terror" on U.S soil?
Will there be more soldiers who oppose the war taking such measures?
Will there be a backlash (Increased anti muslim sentiments in U.S)?
Does anyone believe this was merely Post traumatic stress at fault?

I wouldn't generalize about this.

Sure I see something concerning in the extreme behavior of major Nidal Malik Hasan: he is a psychiatrist in US Army. A psychiatrist should see an incoming stress factor and he should be able to prevent similar facts [even resigning from the Army if it was the case].

Newspaper say he was at Fort Hood, Texas. He has been serving in the Army for about 20 years and he was known as a patriot.

So, considering that what has happened is in some way linked to the fact that the "doctor" didn't want to go to Iraq ... it's fundamental to understand which is the stress factor behind this.

I exclude "post traumatic stress", it would be a kind of "pre traumatic stress" ... reasons are differents.

I suggest to Americans not to generalize about similar episodes. It's a great risk for a multiethnic society.

If a single muslim does anything at this point in the U.S the entire "group" can expect to face greater suspicion.

The muslims in law enforcement and the armed forces must be feeling quite uncomfortable.

Luca it may be too early to know his motives or all of his concerns but some have suggested that being in a position to hear all of the gruesome details of a war which he opposed may have created some trauma (A theory some have put out there).

For the benefit of Adoni who thinks that post traumatic stress disorder means "he fought in some war" :):

"Posttraumatic stress disorder[1][2] (abbreviated PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to one or more traumatic events that threatened or caused great physical harm.

It is a severe and ongoing emotional reaction to an extreme psychological trauma.[3] This stressor may involve someone's actual death, a threat to the patient's or someone else's life, serious physical injury, an unwanted sexual act, or a threat to physical or psychological integrity,[1] overwhelming psychological defenses."

Nobody said the soldier had fought in a war.
Some have speculated that he was extrememly disturbed about the prospect of having to deploy to the conflict and was distraught after being unable to leave the military and felt he was being forced into a situation where he would commit what he viewed as "atrocities". (Investigation is ongoing so we don't for sure what the motives are...That's why there are question marks in the initial post Adoni my boy:)

this is tragic for everybody. I dont understand why it was said "if a single muslim does something it affects everybody who serves and is also a muslim." Imagine if when a crime was commited and everytime they said " a christain man commited such in such or a hindu or a buddhist.
