Kachinland was an independent nation with its own definite territory under its legitimate rulers outside Burmese Kingdoms until the colonial time. Kachin lived under its own legitimate leaders, spoke its own language, and developed and passed along its culture and traditions for generations.
Under the British
Even under the British, the Kachin Hill areas were administered separately from the Burma proper, under a special code- called Kachin Hills regulation - which gave considerable place to Kachin customary law.
Forming the Union
Only in 1947 did Kachinland along with Shans, Chins and pre-war independent Karenni State voluntarily accept the British Burma's invitation to join in forming an independent union under the pretexts of the Panglong Conference. However, the dishonesties, and the Chauvinist views of the Burman politicians and politicized-Burmans forced the Kachin people to break up with the Union. Therefore, the Kachin Independence Organization was formed in 1961 to regain her pre-colonial status.

i worked three months for 101 Kachin Rangers in 2005 after some American veterans and officers from the US Embassy from Ygn came to Mkn...There were three of us who got interviewed and hired instantly to teach basic english to orphans in two different places..i left because it was too difficult to work with old people who are obsessed whith their religious beliefs..just fighting for power and trying to influence others..damn it..
