Andre Fontenelle “The Reddman”

What’s there that can be said about The Reddman. Who is the Reddman? And What’s with the Voice? Well, born Andre Dunstan Fontenelle, son of Dunstan and Lucille Fontenelle, in the mid-seventies, Andre is number five out of six kids, in a family consisting of two brothers and three sisters. His older brother, by 13 years, was always into the music scene at one time working part time for Radio Caribbean International. Growing up was a fun time for Andre as he was brought up knowing the rewards of hard work and loving them. His parents always instilled in him a sense of value and moral dignity which always led him to believe that he could be anything he wanted if he just tried hard and wanted it enough.

Andre grew up in Castries, the capital city of St. Lucia, and attended the Anglican Infant & Primary Schools. He later when on to attend the Saint Mary’s College Secondary School for Boys. After attending for a 1 year, he was presented the opportunity of moving to Canada to live with his father, who was the manager of the St. Lucia Tourist Board, Canada Office, and three sisters who had made the initial move with their father. In Toronto, Scarborough to be exact, Andre and his younger brother Dunstan, grew up like any other kid, going sledding in winter time , and going Trick or Treating. It was During his last year at elementary school he started taking a liking to sports, in particular two, basketball and Track &Field. In his final year he, set the record for the high jump in his age group, also received the Athlete of the Year award from his School, St. Ignatius of Loyola.

The summer of his final year in elementary, his family moved to the newly developing area of Markham, moving to #3 Dewberry Drive. That year he also attended the Francis Libermann Catholic High School. It was there that his love more basketball developed. He made it on the bantam team, second string and was part of a team that went undefeated through the regular season only to be defeated in the 2nd round in the playoffs. In Grade 10, due to geographical reasons, Andre transferred to a school in his District, Brother Andre Catholic Secondary School, in Markham. It was there that Andre got exposed to the whole new world of High School Living, for the school had bigger and better facilities as well as more students. Where Francis Libermann had about 8-900 students, B.A. (as the students called it) boasted 2300 students. It was also here that he got exposed to racism. Amongst that, playing basketball, and being a high school student, Andre started developing a passion for the Sciences and settled on that field for his tertiary education. It was also in his final year that Andre sustained a knee injury which would require reconstructive surgery. That put and end to his dreams of athletic success.

Andre graduated high school and then attended Centennial Community college, looking to major in Industrial Microbiology, a field which he was most interested in. However, his knee surgery was scheduled in his first semester at college, which required him to miss six weeks of classes. Always playing keep up and the trauma of not being as athletic as he once was, Andre dropped out in his second year and took up jobs bouncing at nightclubs and private events, taking odd jobs here and there just to get by. It was the he really got a glimpse of the entertainment industry.

After doing security for a few years, Andre decided to move back to St. Lucia in 2000. To hear him say it, “Something was calling me back Home.” Back in St. Lucia, Andre got a job working at The Wave. That was where he got his taste for radio. From there he went on to work with Hot FM, and later freelance with Radio Caribbean International. He has found a home at Rhythm Fm in 2005, where his dynamic and intuitive personality, along with a witty intellect and what has been called “the perfect radio voice” can only bring about what is perceived as “great radio”. Since being back he has hosted as an MC a variety of events including, 2006 St. Lucia Jazz Festival, The 2006 Miss Universe Selection Pageant St. Lucia, The 2006 Miss Earth Selection Pageant St. Lucia, the 2006 BMW Golf Invitational Awards Gala as well as Mas on the Square 2006. He’s also been the MC for shows featuring artists such as, The Mighty Sparrow, Junior Reid, Sean Paul, Capleton, Bushman, Mya, Morgan Heritage, Bushman, Shaggy, Maxi Priest, Seal, Ciara and Poncho Sanchez to name a few.

You can catch “The Reddman” weekday mornings from 6-10 in “The Rhythm Formula” and on Sunday afternoon with his own show “the Super Sunday Sensation” from 3-7 pm.

Currently, The Reddman is working out establishing his charity, REAL© which stands for Reading Enlightens All Lives©. This charity is geared towards promoting literacy in his island home of St. Lucia. The mission of REAL is to increase the literacy of the country. Whether it be with the underprivileged kids who can’t afford to go to school, or the street walker who would like a chance to better themselves.
